This tour will be led by architects from the Iowa Architectural Foundation. The Western Gateway is an exciting zone of urban development and neighborhood rebirth. The businesses, retailers and residents of this area have reinvented Des Moines’ entry corridor with a decidedly urban mix, breathing new life into beautiful historic buildings, adding contemporary architecture and surprising the eye with intriguing green spaces. The area of town known as “Auto Row” from the 1920’s up to 2000 is an eclectic mix, with fine dining, coffee shops and corporate neighbors. See the stunning new Krause Gateway Center, designed by world famous architect Renzo Piano, the John & Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park, the beautifully restored Temple for the Performing Arts (1913), listed on the National Register, the Central Library designed by David Chipperfield in 2006, Meredith Corporation headquarters and more. Head to the Gumpy Goat for drinks afterwards.
